Caring For Your Shrubs & Trees In Winter

The winter months in New Zealand can be tough, it’s critical to consider how to care for your shrubs and trees during this time. Winter can be particularly harsh on small shrubs and young trees with insufficient root systems.

However, with proper care and attention, you can help your garden survive the winter, ready to thrive again in the spring. Here are some essential shrub and tree care tips to keep in mind as you care for them this winter.

Mulching

Mulching is an important practice that can help your shrubs and trees survive the winter.

Acting as an insulator, mulch helps to regulate the soil temperature and keeps the roots from freezing. It can also aid in the retention of moisture in the soil, which is critical for the health of the plant during the winter months.

When mulching, make sure to spread the mulch evenly around the plant’s base, forming a layer at least 2-3 inches thick. Avoid piling mulch against the plants boot, as this can lead to rot and other problems. To allow for air circulation, be sure to leave a small gap between the mulch and the boot.

Pruning

Another essential winter care task that can help keep your garden healthy and strong is pruning.

Winter is actually the best time for the pruning of deciduous trees, as they are dormant and have no leaves; this makes it easier to see their structure and identify any dead or damaged branches.

Pruning can help improve the overall health and shape of shrubs and trees, increase resistance to disease and pests, and promote new growth in the spring. When pruning, make clean cuts with sharp, clean pruning tools and if you can, avoid removing more than one-third of a tree’s canopy.

Wrapping

Wrapping your shrubs and trees can also help to protect them from winter damage, especially if they are young or vulnerable.

Wrapping can insulate the trunk of the plant, prevent frost cracking and sun-scald, and keep pests and animals away from the bark. When wrapping your plants, use a light coloured, breathable material like burlap or tree wrap. Begin at the base and wrap the material loosely around the boot, slightly overlapping each layer as you go.

Be careful not to wrap too tightly, as this could cause damage to the bark and limit the plants growth.
